About Magnolia Betty

Magnolia ‘Betty’ is a hybrid cultivar belonging to the so-called ‘Little Girl’ series, developed in the 1950s by the US National Arboretum. The series was specially bred to flower later in the season than the early-flowering varieties, thus reducing the risk of frost damage to the flowers. Flowering of ‘Betty’ falls in April-May and produces striking, tulip-shaped flowers in deep pink-purple on the outside with a lighter interior. The flowers are large, up to 20 cm across, and fragrant. ‘Betty’ flowers more profusely than many other magnolias and has the characteristic of sometimes producing a second, more modest flowering during the summer. The growth habit is broad bushy to small tree with multi-stemmed habit. The trunk and branches are grey-green and smooth. The leaves appear after flowering: dark green, glossy and oval, full and lush in summer. In autumn, the leaves turn yellow before falling. Red fruit heads may appear after flowering, although they are less conspicuous than in some other species. Growth rate is moderate. Available from Smits as a multi-stemmed specimen at 350/400 cm in height, a size that immediately gives an imposing presence.

Application and location

Magnolia ‘Betty’ is excellent as a solitary ornamental shrub or small tree in gardens, villa grounds and park designs. Its rich pink blooms in spring are an eye-catcher and its compact, multi-stemmed growth habit fits well into a variety of garden styles. A sunny to slightly sheltered position in a humous, slightly acidic to neutral loam or clay soil is ideal. Calcareous and dry soils are less suitable. The later flowering compared to early flowering magnolias reduces the risk of frost damage to the flowers. Winter hardiness is good for the Netherlands. Can also be used in urban environments.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about Magnolia Betty

Magnolia ‘Betty’ flowers in April to May, later than the earliest flowering magnolias such as star magnolia. This reduces the risk of frost damage to the flowers. The tulip-shaped, deep pink-purple flowers are large and fragrant. A second, more modest flowering may sometimes occur in summer.
‘Betty’ eventually reaches a height of 3 to 5 metres with a broad, multi-stemmed habit. Its width is similar to or slightly greater than its height. At Smits, multi-stemmed specimens are available at 350/400 cm in height. The growth rate is moderate.
Yes, ‘Betty’ is well hardy in the Netherlands. A hybrid from the ‘Little Girl’ series, it has been specially selected for robustness and late flowering to limit frost damage. Additional protection is not normally required.
The flowers of ‘Betty’ are tulip-shaped and large, up to 20 cm across. The outside is deep pink-purple; the inside is lighter pink. The flowers are also slightly fragrant. The colour contrast and size make the blooms particularly striking.
A sunny to slightly sheltered position in a humous, slightly acidic to neutral loam or clay soil is ideal. Full sun or semi-shade is fine. Calcareous soil and drought are unfavourable. A sheltered position protects the flowers and young leaves.
Yes, ‘Betty’ is deciduous. The dark green leaves turn yellow in autumn before falling. Flowering occurs before the leaves fully unfurl, making the flowers highly visible on bare or just unfurling branches.
Yes, its modest end size of 3 to 5 metres and compact multi-stemmed habit make ‘Betty’ well suited to medium and larger gardens as a solitary ornamental shrub. In small gardens, it can function as a focal point in a sheltered, sunny spot.
Magnolia ‘Betty’ has the characteristic of sometimes giving a second, more modest bloom in summer, in addition to the main bloom in April-May. This second flowering is less abundant but adds extra ornamental value to the summer garden. Not every year and not every specimen exhibits this behaviour.
