About Prunus laurocerasus Novita
Prunus laurocerasus ‘Novita’ is a selected cultivar of the common cherry laurel known for its particularly broad, dark glossy leaves and its robust, upright growth habit. The cherry laurel is native to the mountain forests of south-eastern Europe and Asia Minor, and has been used in western European gardens for centuries. ‘Novita’ has become one of the most popular cultivars thanks to its combination of large leaves, strong growth and good shade tolerance. The growth habit is upright and broadly bushy. The trunk and branches are grey-brown. The leaves are the pride of ‘Novita’: large, oval, glossy dark green and with a striking leathery texture. The leaves are present all year round. In May, the shrub blooms with white flowers in erect clusters that emit a slight almond-like scent. After flowering, small black cherry-like fruits form that attract birds. The growth rate is fast, which makes ‘Novita’ suitable for reaching desired sizes quickly. It is also suitable as an espalier tree. Available from Smits in root ball from 175/200 cm to 350/400 cm height, in box at 175/200-200/225 cm and as multi-stemmed container at 200/250 cm height.
Application and location
Prunus laurocerasus ‘Novita’ is exceptionally versatile: as a free-standing ornamental shrub, as a dense hedge or privacy fence, as an espalier or in root ball as a direct screen. Its tolerance to sun, semi-shade and deep shade is exceptional. Well-drained soil of loam, clay, sand or lime. Wind-tolerant and coastal. Excellent winter hardiness. One point of attention: when pruned, bay cherries can show a blue fungal sensitivity; pruning in dry and not too warm weather is recommended. Suitable for garden, park, city and coast.
