About Taxus baccata Fastigiata Robusta
Taxus baccata ‘Fastigiata Robusta’ is a cultivar of the European yew with a strong upright, columnar growth habit. The name ‘Fastigiata’ refers to the bound, steeply ascending branches; ‘Robusta’ indicates the more vigorous and broader habit compared to the slender ‘Fastigiata’. The growth habit is narrow conical to columnar: the branches grow steeply upwards and the crown remains compact and bunched. Compared to the normal columnar taxus ‘Fastigiata’, ‘Fastigiata Robusta’ is somewhat broader and more robust in build, making it more stable and less vulnerable to branch break-up under snow load. The trunk is reddish brown. The leaves are dark green, fine and needle-shaped, present all year round. Flowering is inconspicuous: small yellow flowers in early spring. The red aril leaves in autumn provide decorative ornamental value. Growth rate is slow to moderate, making the columnar form particularly manageable. Tolerates sun, semi-shade and shade. Drought and wind tolerant. Available at Smits in box sizes from 120/140 cm to 180/200 cm height.
Application and location
‘Fastigiata Robusta’ is ideally suited as a vertical accent in formal gardens, as a border of paths and terraces, in tight geometric designs and as a hedge of columnar elements. Its sturdier form is more stable than the slender ‘Fastigiata’ at snow pressure. Sun, semi-shade or shade on a well-drained soil of loam, clay, sand or lime. Drought- and wind-tolerant. Excellent winter hardiness. Attention: poisonous. Suitable for garden, park and urban use.
