About Taxus media 'Farmen'

Taxus media ‘Farmen’ is a cultivar of Taxus media - a hybrid yew crossed from Taxus baccata (common vine) and Taxus cuspidata (Japanese yew). Taxus media hybrids are known for their slightly more vigorous growth than Taxus baccata and their good pruning ability. ‘Farmen’ was selected as a compact, multi-stemmed cultivar with a dense, well-closed green mass. The growth form is broad and compact, dense in needle clothing. Available from Smits as a multi-stemmed plant in sizes from 200/250 to 250/300 centimetres in height. At maturity, the plant reaches 2 to 4 metres in height. The trunk has a brownish-red, scaly yew bark. The leaves are needle-shaped, dark green on top, lighter green underneath. Fully evergreen - the same dark green colour all year round. That permanent dark green mass is structurally valuable in all seasons. The red arilli are decorative in autumn and winter and are a valuable food source for birds. All other parts of the yew are poisonous. Growth is slow to moderate - slightly faster than the common Taxus baccata. That slightly faster growth combined with the compact, dense habit makes ‘Farmen’ particularly suitable for use as a hedge, topiary form or as a dense evergreen structure plant. Wind resistance and air pollution tolerance are good. Pruning ability is excellent - yew responds exceptionally well to pruning and forms dense, compact shoots.
