About Taxus media 'Greenland'

Taxus media ‘Greenland’ is a cultivar of the hybrid yew - a cross between Taxus baccata (common vine) and Taxus cuspidata (Japanese yew). ‘Greenland’ was selected for its particularly compact, dense growth habit and its bright dark green needle dress that retains good colour all year round. The name refers to the fresh, green colour the plant retains even in winter. Available from Smits in several pruned forms: as a box in sizes from 120/140 to 160/180 centimetres in height, and as a flat sphere from 80 to 100 centimetres in diameter. These knotted shapes are the result of expert, multi-year topiary pruning and immediately give an architectural character. The growth form of ‘Greenland’ is compact and broad, with a dense needle dress that responds excellently to pruning. At maturity, the plant reaches 1.5 to 3 metres in height and width, depending on pruning. The trunk has the characteristic brownish-red scaly yew bark. The needle leaf is small, dark green on top and lighter green on the underside, similar to other Taxus media cultivars. Fully evergreen - the same dark green colour all year round. The red arilli that ripen in autumn and winter are decorative and eaten by birds. All other yew parts are poisonous. Growth is slow to moderate. This slow growth is advantageous for the stability of pruned forms. The pruning ability of ‘Greenland’ is excellent - the plant responds densely and vigorously to pruning. Wind resistance and tolerance to air pollution are good.

Application and location

Yew ‘Greenland’ is a versatile evergreen structure plant for formal villa gardens, terraces and parks. As a box or flat sphere, it immediately gives an architectural, mature accent. Its dense habit and excellent pruning ability give it wide applicability as a solitary form, hedge element or embroidery element. It thrives in full sun to shade. On loam, clay and sand. Wind resistant and air pollution tolerant. Caution: poisonous. Winter hardiness is excellent. Available from Smits as a box from 120/140 to 160/180 cm and as a flat sphere from 80 to 100 cm.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about Taxus media 'Greenland'

At Smits, ‘Greenland’ is available as a twined box in sizes from 120/140 to 160/180 centimetres in height and as a flat sphere from 80 to 100 centimetres in diameter. These bracketed shapes are the result of multi-year, expert topiary.
Yes, completely evergreen. The dark green needle leaves remain throughout the year and retain their fresh, dark green colour even in winter - hence the name ‘Greenland’.
Yes, all parts of the yew are toxic to humans and most animals, except for the red, succulent aril tissue around the seed. When used in places with children or animals, awareness of toxicity is recommended.
Slow to moderate - like all yew cultivars. That slow growth is an advantage as a pruned topiary: the box or bulbous forms remain stable for years without intensive pruning.
Yes, the yew also tolerates shade well - better than most other conifers. Even in deep shade, the plant remains green and healthy. This shade tolerance makes it particularly valuable in places under trees or on the north side of buildings.
Yes, well suited. Its dense habit and excellent pruning ability make ‘Greenland’ suitable for hedge planting. The yew responds vigorously and densely to pruning.
Excellent winter hardiness. The yew also tolerates harsh Dutch winters well.
Loam, clay and sand are suitable. Well-drained soil is the main requirement - prolonged wet feet are detrimental. Yew is otherwise fairly soil-tolerant.
